My Calling

I believe God has called me to be a person that speaks out for those who are overlooked, and those who are manipulated, devalued and perceived as the have-nots of our world.

Growing up in an inner city community, I had the opportunity to see poverty first-hand. I saw broken families ensnared in a cycle of poverty which left them living check by check, I saw friends who desired love find brotherhood in the arms of gang affiliates only to be murdered at the young age of 17, and I saw a community enslaved to the lie that education was something for fools. My community is not a cluster of the ignominious or the lesser of our nation. I believe these issues are a product of broken families, in a broken system whom no matter how much they may work, can never penetrate the circle of poverty that surrounds them.

My community was MEANT FOR MORE! I have had the privilege of receiving a higher education and do intend to be a person that utilizes that resource to the fullest capacity. I feel called to serve as a person that works alongside and covers various non-profit organizations through public policy. I have had the opportunity to work with an array of organizations that assist families in need of various educational and financial resources and have seen the incredible work they have provided. These agencies often struggle with funding and lack the manpower to carry out and expand the service they provide. Through public policy I have the opportunity to stand for these non-profits, to assure they have the finances, resources, and backing within the political realm to further develop the purpose of their organization.

Being able to do such work means developing a ministry that is contingent on making sure that the call of Proverbs 31 which states,

“Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute. Speak up and judge fairly; defend the rights of the poor and needy”

is well positioned at the face of the Church. To hold accountable as well as be held in account of serving those in need.

I want to be an advocate for the unseen because I have a deep love for people and an even deeper place in my heart for parents who so love their children that they surrender all they have to assure their children are well taken care of. The Parents who give everything to provide meals for their families, books for school, and a safe place for them to rest. These are the stories that go untold, those stories of people who feel they have no hope and no means to sufficiently produce financial stability for their own.

Being an advocate for disadvantaged families and non-profits meeting the needs within inner-city communities is EVERYTHING to me! My family couldn’t afford to have me in college, but somehow my parents made a way. I know so little of the strain it brought them, from the long-shifts, careful budgeting, to the earnest prayers only a mother’s hand could reach out to for such an opportunity to be made available to me and my siblings. My calling as someone who voices the need through this avenue of social work is a privilege to me, because it means that I am able to be a person that stands in the gap for those whose voices and stories were like mine. It means I have the possibility to Be HOPE, to Be LOVE and to bridge this gap between families and those at the forefront seeking justice and opportunity for all.
